About Us Title

As a young girl growing up on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, Mieko Mintz sat by her mother and watched her knit. When the knitting was for her, she would tell her mother what she wanted. Make the fingers on the glove different colors. And make the fingertip another color from the rest of the finger. She began her career in Tokyo as a knitwear designer, designing both for computerized knitting machines and hand-crocheted pieces.

Here in New York, she began designing funky hats and other pieces, which were first hand knit here and later in China. In addition to her own store in Soho, her work has been sold at such fine stores as Calypso, Bergdorf Goodman and ABC Home. After noticing a bit of Internet chatter among knitters about her knit work and an increasing number of knitters coming in just to see how the pieces were made, Mieko decided to create Mieko Mintz Knitting Class kits, patterns and yarn.

Mieko makes the designs, and the samples and patterns are made by two expert knitters, Wakana Gates and Mari Tobita. Wakana also teaches knitting and Mari is also a puppet designer.
