I started knitting 4 years ago when one of my friends praised a knit cap I was wearing which I had bought. I thought to myself, “I should be able to make this.” Taking out some balls of yarn brought to mind my memories as a 12-year-old, when my mother had taught me how to knit. I started, but the wool was not enough, so I cut some cloth and knitted with the pieces. The next day, I showed the cap I'd just finished to my friend who owns a gallery and she said, “I want to buy it!” I was so pleased. And not only my friends, but strangers too were complimenting my hat. So I made more and more and more. That winter, I made many knit caps with different designs and sold them all. Last year, I continued knitting and had an exhibition in the East Village with some other designers. There I met two boutique owners, who started to sell my knits at their shops. I like to make something that makes people smile and feel happy. I want to express the fantasy world in my mind through my knitting. Usually, I don't have a design before I starting knitting. Standing in front of my wool collection, I choose colors by feeling. Ideas come from my daily life, such as someone's bag that I glimpsed as I passed by, graffiti on walls and so on. Those elements strike me and become my sweet knit caps. |
